Final Blog Reflection

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
My expectations of this course was to learn about art and art history, and to create art as well. These expectations were met 100% with all of the projects and reading assignments that we have completed over the semester.
2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your initial posting?
Art is a visual representation of something created by an artist who wants the viewer to interpret the meaning of it. Art is also the product or process of deliberately arranging symbolic elements in a way that influences and affects one or more of thesenses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The definition is similar to the one i had in the beginning of the class but now there is more understanding behind the words.
3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
I believe my favorite artist in my first posting was Leonardo Da Vinci. At the conclusion of the course, though i do still have an appreciation for his work he is no longer my favorite artist. However i don't know that i have a favorite artist, but an appreciation for art as a whole now.
4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?

I feel that taking an online course can be challenging at times, but also very convenient. I feel that it allows for a lot of freedom but requires you to stay on task so you don't fall behind. This view is similar to my original post and hasn't changed much.

Week Fifteen- Art Gallery Visit #3: Self-Portraits Art Making/Material Exploration Blog

To find my inspiration for my self-portrait I visited the Burchfield Penny Art Center. I chose these three self-portraits because they were all different in my eyes. Each portrait uses different mediums and are all completely different. George William Eggers' self-portrait interested me the most because I knew I wanted to use pencil for my portrait. His self-portrait is much more skilled than mine of course but I liked how realistic it looked. Charles E. Burchfield conveys his mood by painting an expression on his face. He looks angry. I did not want to depict myself in a bad mood but I wanted to show expression on my face so I chose a photograph of me smiling. His painting also looks "cartoonish" and I think mines does too. I tried to make it as realistic as possible. Alice O Malley's self-photograph is interesting because it is taken in black and white. This inspired me not to use colored pencil and to shade in dark and light grays. It is a powerful photo because the background is dark and she is light and there is no use on color. I am not a good artist but I tried to use hatching and cross hatching to demonstrate light and dark areas of the picture. I could not shade very well so I tried shading as little as possible. I enjoyed this project the most. The only thing I wish is that my drawing skills were better. This project opened my mind up to abilities to what I could create.

Week Fifteen - Video Review Blog:

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T. J. Clark: The main concept of this video is an interview by T.J Clark of one of Abstract Expressionisms principle artists, Clement Greenburg. In this interview they discuss the evolution of art criticism and issues surrounding modernist painting. The conversation spotlights Greenberg’s reflections on his career and its place in art theory, journalism, and philosophy of aesthetics. Greenberg also shares a number of insights on the relationship between art and history, the nature of value judgments in criticism, and what he calls America’s post-WWII “culture boom”.

Greenberg on Pollock: An Interview by T. J. Clark: The main concept of this video is an interview by T.J Clark of one of Abstract Expressionisms principle artists, Clement Greenburg. In this interview they discuss career, working method, and legacy of Jackson Pollock. This video focuses on Pollock’s work from the mid-1940s onward and highlights Greenberg’s firsthand observations of the artist in his studio. Greenburg states that Pollock was an outsider but practical and pretentious. He also reflects on a supposed transition from easel to mural painting.

An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance: Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists has been the basis of art criticism since the 16th century. This program illustrates how each master of art developed their techniques by building upon the work of their predecessors. The discussion between Master Vasari and his apprentice reveals the innovations of artists such as Giotto, Ghiberti, Donatello, Uccello, Masaccio, Della Francesca, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raffaello, and Michelangelo. Images of selected in this video illustrate the Roman influence on Renaissance art and reinforce the concepts of perspective, balance, chiaroscuro, composition, and realism.

The Critics: Stories from the Inside Pages: This film is about the journey of Dr. Dwight DeWerth-Pallmeyer to answer the question, “How do critics serve the public and the artistic community. Pallmeyer interviews people such as Good Morning America film reviewer Joel Siegel, Time magazine film critic Richard Schickel, Nashville Scene music critic Bill Friskics-Warren, and Fresh Air book critic Maureen Corrigan. The result is an in-depth look at criticism as an art form, the social value of a critic’s work, and the various ways that critics began their careers.

The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non-Western Art and Culture: The film is about the 1900 World’s Fair which in its time was promoted as a celebration of foreign ethnicities, but is seen now as a spectacle of Eurocentric myopia. Using photographs, film clips, and posters from the fair with commentary from renowned art historians the program lays bare the conceit. Offerings from collections and museums across the world are also featured. The result is a look at the ways in which western prejudice, ethnography, and art consumption have counteracted authentic intercultural dialog.

Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T. J. Clark in Conversation: This video is about a discussion between two critics, T.J. Clark and Michael Fried. Clark is concerned primarily with the sociopolitical history of art, whereas, Fried is a proponent of aesthetically based views of painting and sculpture. The video shows how the two artists try to obtain common ground. The two critics study two works of Jackson Pollack; these pieces are Lavender Mist and Autumn Rhythm.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.

yes the videos do relate to the creation of my art criticism project. These videos relate because the videos cover the views of critics and show the process of how real critics critique works. By watching these videos it helped me to complete my project.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?

The films are interesting and well made. They add depth to understanding of art criticism by showing how the process works, and how the process has evolved through history. They also elaborate on the careers or critiques and show how they do their job

Blog Reflection Process Journal

The process of creating my art exhibition was a fun and interesting experience. I chose my theme because I felt that finding paintings and images of watercolors would be pretty easy to do. The first thing I did in the process of creating my project was to look through the projects that were completed in past semesters. By using these I got an idea of the format I wanted to use for my power point. After this was done I used the Google search engine to find images of artist who were well known watercolor painters. From there everything self explanatory picking out the perfect work of art that defines color. Overall I think this was a fun, but tedious project that I found interesting to complete.

Week Thirteen and Fourteen - Blog: Video Review

1.      For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art:

The main concept of this film is Artist Anthony Amussin stating that 'Lowbrow Art' is essentially reactionary to highbrow culture. The dictionary definition is, "a person regarded as uncultivated and lacking in taste." The film focuses on this type of lowbrow art.
Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach:

The main concept of this film is the Modern art in the Museum of Modern Art. The film states that from 1929 onwards the art was displayed primarily in chronological order, representing each art movement. Art is displayed on white walls with flexible lighting. Another main point the film makes is that critics argue that Tate Modern's thematic presentation of art requires that viewers have no knowledge of art.

Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology:

The main idea of this film is that Native Americans' bones were collected as a scientific curiosity during the U.S. genocide against Indians. There is a debate on whether or not the remains should be returned to their ancestors. Native Americans have ceremonies to discover whether the bones are of their ancestors or not. The Indians past is conveyed through an oral tradition. Native Americans do not believe in the scientists' history.
George Eastman House: Picture Perfect:

The main idea of this film is that by creating the first affordable, user-friendly camera George Eastman became the father of popular photography. The film shows the museum established at his home that celebrates the contributions he and his company have made to advance the art, science, and phenomenon of photography. The photography collection at George Eastman House is a visual history of photography that represent’s the work of 14,000 amateur and professional photographers. The collection is enormous and contains many different types of photography.

 2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
Yes, the videos relate to the creation of my Art Exhibition project because the videos discuss different exhibitions and the arrangement of said exhibits. There are different ways of arranging artwork and these videos show examples of these. Chronology is one example. Artworks can also be arranged with no set pattern as well.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
The films were well put together and very interesting. They will definitely be of help in the creation of my project. Before watching the films i didn’t have a clear idea of how i was going to do the project, but by the end of the films i had some insight in to how i would complete the project. Overall the films were helpf

Week Twelve - Blog: Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.

The films I picked were Isamu Noguchi: The Sculpture of Spaces, Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the '50s and '60s, Hockey on Photography, and Andy Warhol: Images of an Image. I picked the Andy Warhol video because i really enjoy his work. I picked the Hockney video because I like photography. I picked Abstract Expressionism and Pop because i thought this was an area of art that would interest me. Lastly, I picked the Isamu Noguchi video because the title caught my eye.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Abstract Expressionism and Pop: The key concepts in the film are that Abstract Expressionism was born from a joining of attitudes in American art and European avant-garde art, but was later rejected for its nonfigurative and seemingly egocentric character in favor of the ultra-objective phenomenon known as Pop Art. By using Franz Kline's painting "C&O," abstract art is compared to figurative art. T

Isamu Noguchi: The key concept of this film is the sculptor Isamu Noguchi. He creates sculpture gardens to "humanize space and sculpture." Noguchi's childhood holds many clues to his interest in sculpture gardens and to his feelings of isolation.

Andy Warhol: The key concept of this film is the artist Andy Warhol. He worked as a commercial artist until 1960 when he began experimenting with advertising images. He worked until his untimely death in 1987. One process he used for his artwork was Silk Screening. Silk Screening is when photographs are blown up and developed onto silk screens; they are transferred to paper and canvas, using ink and paint.

Hockney on Photography:  The key concept of this film is the artist David Hockney. He discusses the void between the person behind the camera and the subject. He aims to take away the void. Hockney uses photographic images to create something pertaining more to the condition of painting. Hockney experiments with photography over a five-year period in the 1980s.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

These videos relate to the readings in the text because they discuss artists and topics that we read in the book this chapter, and also in previous chapters. They help to elaborate on the topics we've learned and show more about these topics.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I thought that these films were very interesting and helpful. They were well put together and covered the information they discussed well. The films added depth to understanding by elaborating on topics discussed in the text. They showed more examples and explained in more depth and this added depth to understanding

Step 4: Art Criticism Exercise
1.Red Grooms' Joseph's Bridge, 2004
Acrylic and wood
Gary& Marilyn Hollinger
Analysis: One of my favorite pieces throughout the gallery and exhibit. The painting was an installation depicting the Brooklyn Bridge and the bustle of New York City. People are of different racial ethnicity are depicted bicycling, jogging, pushing a stroller, hugging. There are taxis and vans on the bridge and Tugboats and cruisers in the water. After closely analyzing the painting, I observed the Africans Americans to be overweight in the painting. Unfortunately, I feel the painter was going by factual information. In terms of elements and principles used, I feel the artist did an excellent job balancing the painting by putting all aspects of the city live in the painting. He used yellow as the boardwalk color, creates an excellent contrast between the foreground and background. Overall, he uses bright colors, to draw the viewers into the piece. The boardwalk stands out of the painting, to put more emphasis on the boardwalk and bridge.

2.
Artisit: John F. Simon Jr.

Title of work: Endless Victory

Media: Software, Apple Powerbook G4 and acrylic plastic

Size: N/A

Date: 2005

This piece of art has there squares the one on the bottom is white that is in the position of a diamond and the middle one is blue that is layered like a normal square and the top one is multi colors of red yellow white that is the power book and is layered in the diamond position. There is always movement of the details that are in the top square. Line is as symbols in this piece it also has implied shapes such as the squares. The frames force the viewer to look across the pieces. The light of the software emphasizes certain things at different times. He uses primary colors, red yellow and blue to draw attention to the top square. When certain images are played he uses space to create a 3 or 4 dimensional feel. The new images of everyday shapes that pop of reminds me that there is always something new in life to appreciate there is an endless number of choices one can make even if they are the simplest. I think the artist is trying to say is that things never ending he illustrates this with the constant movement in piece.

3. James E. Butterworth
The New York Yacht Club Schoorer,Resolute, Leading the fleet
Oil in canvas
Analysis: In this painting the yacht is leading the fleet against the waves. The background value of background creates an excellent contrast between the sea and background. The painter uses waves in the painting to capture the motion of the ocean; I feel the waves also provide texture for the painting. The artist paints clouds, to put an emphasis on the weather. Cloudy usually suggest bad weather. There are small ships painting in the background to emphasize the fleet and yacht. The yacht is painting bigger than the fleet, excellent proportion. He is using water to unify the piece.

Week Eleven - Blog: Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I selected the videos: Matisse and Picasso, The Impact of Cubism, Dada and Surrealism, and Expressionism. I selected these videos because each are about either an artist or style that I find interesting. I chose the videos I did to learn more about these artists or styles that stand out to me.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Matisse and Picasso:
The key concept of this film is the relationship and connection of the artists Matisse and Picasso. The film shows examples of paintings and sculptures from each, and uses film clips to archive the journey of each artist. The points on their journey where these artists cross is the key part of this film. Françoise Gilot and Picasso’s son Claude provide insight on Picasso’s connection with Matisse.
The Impact of Cubism:
The key concept of this film is the Influenced of the works of Cézanne, African tribal art, and the art of the Iberian Peninsula on Cubism. Cubism was the most influential style of the 20th century and provided artists with nontraditional ways to represent space and form. The film examines pieces such as Juan Gris’ The Breakfast Table (1915), Marcel Duchamp’s Sad Young Man on a Train (1911), Robert Delaunay’s Champ de Mars (1911), Sonia Delaunay’s Electric Prisms (1914), Kazimir Malevich’s An Englishman in Moscow (1913-14), and Umberto Boccioni’s Farewells (1911)
Dada and Surrealism:
The key concept of this film is the Dada movement. Which was born as a reaction to World War I. The film also covers the movement of Surrealism which opened new avenues for artistic creation by striving to bypass the reasoning process and tap directly into the unconscious mind. The video examined Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbild 25 A (1920), Hanna Höch’s Cut with the Kitchen Knife (1919), George Grosz’ Untitled (1920), Joán Miró’s Dutch Interior I (1928), and Salvador Dalí’s The Burning Giraffe (1936).
  Expressionism:
The key concept of this film is expressionism which is an outgrowth of Fauvism. Expressionism emphasized color's emotional properties while demonstrating far less concern than the Fauves had with the formal and structural composition of color. The film also covers how Contemporary Neo-Expressionism has further developed this artistic approach. This program examines: Edvard Munch's Ashes (1894, Osloo Franz Marc's The Tiger (1912), Municho Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Five Women in the Street (1913), Cologneo Max Beckmann's Actors (Triptych) (1941-42), Cambridgeo Georg Baselitz's The Great Friends (1965), Viennao Anselm Kiefer's Interior (1981
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the reading in the text because they discuss many of the artists and art work from the chapter. They also discuss many of the same styles and movements that were covered in the chapter.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
In my opinion the films are well put together and entertaining. They provide much information on the subjects and give many examples of what they are talking about. The films add depth to understanding by providing a visual reference for the information covered in the book. The films also delve deeper into the information explained in the books, and provide more information. This helps to add depth to understanding and increases the viewers knowledge of the subject matter discussed in the book better then the reading alone can provide.

Week Ten- Art Making/Material Exploration Blog: Mask Making

1. The 3 mask that I chose were very interesting. On the first mask i liked the patterns that are all around the face. On the second mask i like the horns and the giant eyes that are very emphasized. The last mask caught my attention because of how much is going on in the mask, and the vast amount of variety.
2.The first mask is an Ecuadorian clown mask. It is 10 inches and made from painted wood. The mask is an oval shaped face with its mouth open. It is painted in red, white, black, and blue, with patterns surrounding the face. It has a red circle on its nose and outlined cheeks, eyes, and eyebrows. The elements and principles that can be found in this piece are form, line, shape, and balance. The mask is 3D and take up a form, there are many lines in the piece, these lines make up shapes and patterns. The whole mask is symmetrically balanced.
  3. The second mask is a Bolivian China Supay mask. It is 14 inches, and made with fiber glass, plaster, paint, papier mache, sequins, and glitter. The mask is an oval shaped face with twisting horns jutting out from each side. The horns are patterned and the eyes are large and emphasized. There are jewels that run along its chin. The elements and principles that are present are from, line, shape, balance, color, emphasis, and rhythm. From is present because it is a 3D mask that takes up space. Line is present and created shape in the mask. The entire mask is symmetrically balanced, and color is used to emphasize the eyes and the horns. Rhythm is found on the pattern on the horns.
The last mask is a Moreno Mask. It is 15 inches, and made with painted tin, hair, and jewelry. The mask is an oval shape with a face that has small spaced out eyes, a large nose, and a large chin. The mouth has a row of large teeth, and there is a pipe in it. On the top of the mask is a crown and it is surrounded by a large amount of hair. The elements and principle found in the mask are form, variety, balance, rhythm. Form is present because the mask is 3D and takes up space. There is much going on in the mask so variety can be found. The mask is symmetrically balanced, and rhythm can be seen in the repeating shaped found all over the mask.
The first of these 3 images is my final mask, the other 2 are ideas and preliminary sketches. I used the elements and principles of balance, rhythm, variety, texture, line, and shape. Balance is present because the whole mask is symmetrical. Rhythm is found in the horns and the repetitive patterns. Variety is present because of the vast amount of things happening in the mask. texture is found in the hair surrounding the mask. And line and shape are found in the shapes created around the face and the lines used to make these shapes.
In my opinion i think my mask is very interesting and has a lot of things in it, this requires time to take it all in. I based it off the 3 masks i listed in the beginning, and by adding elements found in all 3 of those masks to one mask i think it created a very unique piece. I enjoyed the process of researching all of the masks and then creating my own from these inspirational pieces. Overall i think it was a fun and interesting project that i enjoyed completing.

Week Nine - Art Making/Material Exploration Drawings - Exploring Line

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
By using my hand as the subject matter of my drawing it made me have to think about how the hand looked, by putting it in 3D Form I disliked using my own hand because it is hard to keep the same pose for the whole drawing.
2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
The media that i chose was pencil because i feel that pencil offers a little more control . I also didn't have any charcoal on hand and pencil was easier to find.
3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
To create a drawing with my non-dominate hand was awkward. The process was a lot slower
4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
The drawing of my left hand is not as good as the drawing of my right. Because i am right handed i believe that the drawing of my right hand is more realistic looking. .
5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
No i would not consider using my non-dominant hand because i am less able to control my movements with that hand. My right hand allows me to control where i want the pencil to go, whereas with my right hand it is more shaky and less controlled.

Week Nine - Blog: Video Reviews

1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I picked the four videos that I chose because I was familiar with the artists who the videos were about. Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Albrecht Durer, and Rembrandt were the artists in the names of the films and these artists are familiar to me. I chose these four videos to learn more about these artists who I have learned about before.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance:
The main concept of this film was the life and works of Leonardo Da Vinci, the most influential person to have lived during the renaissance. They describe his life from birth to death and list his numerous achievements and great works. Leonardo was the quintessential Renaissance man and this video proves that.
            The Drawings of Michelangelo:
The main concept of this video is how art students can learn from comparing Michelangelo’s finished works with his preparatory drawings that he made. The film compares his drawings with his sculptures, paintings, and architecture that came from them. The film explores and analyses works such as the Pieta, the colossal David, The Sistine Chapel ceiling, and The Last Judgment. The film also looks over the artist’s tools, techniques, and the evolution of his style.
Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master:
The main concept of this video is the life and work of Albrecht Durer the most famous artist of the Northern Renaissance. He was believed to be the main reason for the spread of renaissance beliefs to a Germany dominated by Gothic tradition. The film focuses on some of his most important pieces, his woodcuts, paintings, and engravings. The film also focuses on the people who had influence on his life. These people include Anthony Koberger, Michael Wolgemut, and Willibald Pirckheimer.
            The Night Watch:
The main concepts of this film are the life and works of Rembrandt, but most importantly the work The Night Watch. The film deconstructs this piece and explains the many conventions that it broke during this time. Through its suggestions of movement, dramatic use of light and perspective, and its composition; it broke many of the conventions of art during this period. The film also focuses on the importance this piece holds with the Dutch, and the amount of damage that has been done to the piece over time.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the readings in the text because they are all about renaissance artists. This relates because the chapters discussed this week dealt heavily in renaissance art and the artists that contributed to this time period. Leonardo, Durer, Rembrandt, and Michelangelo were all large contributors to the art and styles of the Renaissance.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
All four of the films are well constructed and very informative. Each explains its subject very well and in great detail. These films add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts by going into more depth on the subjects that were presented in the text. They also achieve this by adding more visuals of the artwork of the period being discussed. The films help because not only do they develop on the information shared in the books, but they also provide more visuals to help to elaborate the points that are trying to be made

Week Eight - Blog: Video Reviews

1. Explain why you selected each of the three videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose the Late Gothic Art video because that time in history is very interesting to me.  The second     video that I chose was the birth of the Middle Ages.  This is known as a dark period in history.  The third video is the Cairo Museum.  I'd love to visit this museum!

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The first video I learned that art had gotten much better by the late middle ages.  During the second  video I learned that Japan also had their version of the middle ages around the same time.  The third video didn't really teach me much but it was very interesting.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos expand on what the textbooks cover.  A lot of this was repetitive.  I didn't learn too much more than what was covered in the book.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I don't think that they added much depth this time.  I feel like it was very repetitive and time consuming.

Week Seven - Blog: Video Review

.      For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Prairie Style: The key concepts discussed in this video are Frank Lloyd Right’s Prairie style of architecture. The film explains how this style changed the face of modern architecture, and it also shows the works of two other architects that he inspired. The architects that were inspired were Dan White and Ron Thorn.
The Science of Design: The key concept of this video is how science is related with architecture. The program focuses on sky scrapers and the science needed to protect them from gravity and wind, but also documents the creation of a smart house. It shows how science and architecture is related and how science helps architecture grow.
Classical Architecture: This films key concept is the classical architecture of the Romans and the Greek. It defines the different styles of these eras such as Doric, ionic, Corinthian, and Tuscan. The video explains how the architecture of these two civilizations has had a lasting influence on architecture.
Last Call for Planet Earth: This video is about the changes needed in architecture that will help to protect our planet. The video highlights the work of architects around the globe who are working on green solutions to architectural problems. These include green roofs, the use of geothermal energy, and passive solar energy.
2.      How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos related to the readings in the text because it went into more depth on the topics that we learned in this chapter. They showed examples of the things we read about such as the styles of the Greeks and Romans, and the use of green technology in architecture.
3.      What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
I enjoyed the videos they were very informative and helped to show just exactly what the book was trying to explain. I think they add depth by allowing us to see the structures and the styles that are mentioned. Also, we are able to see the architects talking about the works themselves and this helps to add understanding.
4.      From the group of four that you had a choice: Why did you choose that film?
The film I chose was the last call for planet earth video. I chose this because it is the field of architecture that most interests me. I like learning the different ways they are developing to protect the earth from pollution and other harm

Week Six - Art Making/Material Exploration #3 Installation

A. What is installation art?
Installation art describes an artist genre of site specific work, they are #D works designed to transform the perception of the space
B. What materials are used installation art?
A very broad range of everyday and natural materials are used in the creation of Installation art. Almost anything can be used in the work, depending on what the artist wants.
C. Why make installation art?
There are many reasons to make installation art, one reason is to make a statement about a space. Another reason is to give people the opportunity to see and experience a space in a different way. Finally installation art can convey a message to the viewers or simple idea.
D. Which artist/installation did I find most interesting?
The artist installation that I found most interesting is Richard Wilson’s 20:50. It is a very interesting looking piece and I would like to walk through and explore the piece

From the material reviewed the piece that I felt a connection with is Thomas Hirschhorn’s I have a connection with this piece because my piece is very similar to the installation that I made.
The Theme that I will explore in my piece is a picture reflection, more clearly the growing presence that music has been in my life with a colleague of bob Marley.
The materials I will use are: pictures, various old and new items a pre-made recycling been and a spray painted colored top.
The installation will be located in my empty lounge in my house. The room has a tiled floor which picks up the  pre-made recycling bin and the pictures which reflects on the musical talent of bob Marley.
2. Description – Describe what you see. (subject matter)?
A long narrow walkway with pre-made recycling bin. There are pictures attached to the bin which is combined together to show how he was into his music and he never gave up on his struggle and sticking to his beliefs. these photos were token by my grand uncle he and bob Marley had a close relationship and my he would always tell me that each of these pictures tell a story in how bob Marley came from being a pauper to becoming a musical inspiration to all of those who were young and old. he inspires me to stand by what i believe and not only that to be a leader and not a follower looking when i created this installation i made it as a memorial for all that he had done in my home land in the west indies Jamaica.
3. Formal analysis – (form) What principles and elements were used and how are they used?
___Line is used. The pictures are in a straight line. Shape is used with the different sized from the top of the bin to the bottom as it gets smaller by size. Light is used by the reflection of the photo Space is used by being used by the space of the bin away from me photographing it. Balance because all of the photos staying in its place. Scale because of the different sizes of pictures i used .Rhythm because of the repetition of the picture from big to small

Project #2 Art Gallery Visit #1- Responding To Artwork

1. Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why? The artwork that made an  impression on me was the installation by Dennis Maher. when i first seen this piece of art it was a mystery but as i look deeper into the art piece it had so many different object combinated together it made me wonder how someone can do that. i wish i could have touched it because there were strings keeping them together.i feel that the author got different  objects and together to put into one. that too me is pure genious and to me art can be anything.
http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z477/jnoble4/picturetwo.jpg
2. Which artworks do i feel a connection with ? why?
This piece of art i forgot to write the information because i was caught up in the art and imagining. this piece of art had me a very light daze it made me think back to my grandmama vein gazebo i had a lot of good times. in this painting it feels as though i could just walk through it and never come back just fade away with the painting that is how real it felt to me.
http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z477/jnoble4/picture6.jpg
3. which artworks would i like to know more about? why?
This piece i also couldnt find information on but it caught my attention as soon as i seen it. as you could see the little girl and i were trying to figure out how and what this was. i was puzzled because i thought it was strong branches stuck on a treasure chest meaning greed and lust. all i wondered the whole time was what was holding up this mysterious chest? what was inside of it? and what was the real purpose for the author creating something like this it had to have some kind of meaning.
http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z477/jnoble4/picture9.jpg
The rest of the art work i took pictures of:

Week 6 Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.  For the first video I couldn't believe the amount of time that the entire process took.  The amount of time and work to complete the piece was an eye opener.  One thing that I learned during the second video is that some ceramics are actually stronger than steel.  For the third one I enjoyed watching the creation of "coral reef" and learning what the artists thoughts were.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?  They cover the same topics however they go into more detail in showing the artwork being created.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?  I enjoy watching the videos.  The book talks about different styles and techniques but the videos show the actual process from start to finish, which makes you appreciate the amount of skill and work that is involved.

Art Making/Material Exploration #1: Exploring Value and The Subtractive Color Theory Blog

Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.

I found the process of creating the color wheel and value scale fun, but kind of hard I enjoyed mixing the colors and placing them on the wheel, i kind of made a remix to the color wheel but thats just me playing around with the colors and seeing what i would come up with. the value scale took time to get all the shades correct. the  project was fun and easy to complete.
2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
The media that i enjoy the best and am most comfortable working with is  pencil. I feel that the pencil allows more control over where you are shading in or drawing. Whereas with the paint brush you don't have as much control and it requires a much steadier hand.
3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
The most important discovery for me in the studies were the difference between the primaries and secondary colors, and how each color is made. the fact that using the primaries of red, yellow, and blue instead of cyan. magenta, and yellow can create different secondary colors which i never knew of before this project i always thought  cyan, magenta and yellow were mainly the assorted.
4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important information i learned while watching the videos for this project was the difference between the primary colors red, yellow and blue, and the primary colors of cyan, magenta, and yellow. I think the video was well done and very informative. It got its message across and didn't take along time to do so. overall It was nice to see an example of what I was supposed to do, especially in the color wheel since I havent worked with paint in a while.

Relflection on Photobucket Project #1

Unity: To show unity i took a picture of bottles all lined up together. This creates unity because all of the bottles are still sealed up and still has its shape

Variety: To show variety i took a picture of my cluttered of my everything bucket. i honestly through everything in there little things and big. the colors found in this picture also help to create variety.

Value: To create value i took a picture of a person whose in a dim room with not much light .The the dim light helps bring out the detail in this person face and the angal they stood in to get a good shot. Texture: To create texture i took a picture of water. I belive the way the picture looks really gives the viewer a "feel" of the water its make it pop in the viewers eyes.

Balance: I used the mirror in my picture to achieve balance between the highlighters .

Proportion: The picture of the hallway creates proportion because as the viewers eye moves down the hallway the doors seem to get smaller.

Rhythm: The repeating of this patterns shown in this piece of clothing shoes that it never changes.

Shape: The square shape of this party favor is defined by its cubic shape the stiching and the fabric. This creates shape in the picture.

Line: Line is created in the picture by the railing that draws the viewers eye towards the stairs.

Harmony: The uncomplicated look and similar elements in the picture of the the sun setting leaves the trees showing alot more detail. this creates harmony in the picture.

Form: The picture of the text book, though abstract, has different shapes and other forms within it. This creates form in the picture.

Color: The color green is expressed in my picture of a simple room fan.

Emphasis: The close of of the subjects face creates emphasis and draws the viewers eye towards it.

Movement: Movement is expressed by the person in the air jumping for fun. it looks as if she is coming back down and her hair is still in the air.

Space: The area created shows my closet and its pretty much empty :)

Week 3

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.Color is a visual attribute of things that results from the light they emit, transmit or reflect. Color has a very large effect on the emotions of people. People have complex emotional responses, and have either cultural or individual association with the colors. Colors can have contradictory cultural association, an example of this can be seen with the color red. Red can evoke the emotion of anger or danger, but can also evoke love or compassion. Color and emotion works best when there is context to provide clues to its meaning. examples being a red stop sign, or a red valentines day card.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?
The theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues me is emotion. This aspect intrigues me because of the different ways color can make people feel, and the different emotions they evoke in people. The fact that a certain emotion is brought up from a color interests me because i am a marketing major. As a marketing major i have also learned that advertising uses colors to evoke emotions in consumers, thus leaving them feeling a certain way about a product.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
In the color video the thing that made the biggest impact on me was the works made by Mark Rothko. His paintings with just colors (intense reds and maroons) were created to evoke certain emotions into people. The paintings were intended for a restaurant but the artist became mad at the owners. The paintings he made were meant to evoke a feeling of being trapped, and to make the people in the restaurant feel uneasy.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
In the feelings video the differences between the two painters Goya and David, and what emotions they wanted to induce impacted me the most. David believe feeling is art yearning to be better, whereas Goya believed the opposite, that it was a murderous drive and the worst of humanity. The colors the artists used show how they view feeling and depict their differences. Goya used very dark colors that stimulate the fear and anger emotions and David used much lighter and happier colors.

Week Two - Blog: Video Review

1.For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Changeux ties in human evolution to art's evolution.  He also analyzes the human brain and it's responses to different feelings such as aesthetic.  He looks at different parts of the brain and points out where the brain's activity is during these feelings.  Ramachandran gave a much better presentation. He also talks a lot about the brain and its responses to different feelings. With the Aesthetics Philosophy of the Arts video I learned about the history of the philosophers all the way back from Plato to the present time which brought me back to high school on my most favorite art class.
2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribtion to the aesthetic theory in your response. The idea of beauty by Plato. in the Fifth century athens Plato devoted him self to praising and exploring love, ultimately gives us a definition of beauty. He explains that it is the Form of Beauty that is the object of love. Diotima’s teachings describe a ladder of love that moves from the appreciation of singular beautiful bodies on up to the ultimate and higher contemplation of the Form of Beauty that makes it possible for us to discern individual cases of beauty at all. If we look at Plato’s theory of art, we see that he held an imitation theory of art that focuses attention on the objective properties of the work of art.
3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture? Ramachandran made it very clear for me to understand the real point of view Aesthetics.  He goes in depth about about the brain's reaction to real life events and compares them to our brain's response to while looking at art.  I got a feel on how Changeux tied in the evolution of humans and the evolution of art.  They dig deep on the brain's activity and responses to looking at art.
4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
yes the video and the readings are similar in a scence the book has alot more wordy detail then in the video it tells a story that viewers can follow by. the video and book talked more deeply about the art and the history and what theme the art tries to present for views to grasp what they are painting. the reading are some what clear but the videos summed up everything that i read in the book.
5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?
My opinion on the first flim brings back to the era of aesthetics. the first film drew my attention at an instant once introdcuing the idea of beauty by plato my mind immeditaly went back to high school in my second year of art class. from there i began to graps everything that the narrator in the film and the book saying. the book was very wordy but once i read along it made more scence but the movie made it much clear for me to understand what the philopsher believe was really art,.
